Ex-Cornwood star to face England
PAKISTAN paceman Aizaz Cheema may divide national loyalty should the former Cornwood star figure in the Test series against England.
Cheema, a great favourite in his four seasons at Oak Park, was included in the Pakistan squad which takes on World number one Test nation – England – in Dubai today.
The Devon Cricket League A Division team are as patriotic as they come, and they remain resolutely four-square behind captain Andrew Strauss' England.
But Corns, to a man, would be 'absolutely thrilled to bits' should their 32-year-old former fast bowler take on the might of England's Strauss, Alastair Cook, Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen in the United Arab Emirates-based Test series.
Nick Goodliffe, Cornwood's development officer, said everyone at the club were 'proud as punch' of Cheema's Pakistan squad call-up and would be watching his progress with interest during the series.
Goodliffe said: "Aizaz is such a lovely, modest guy, as well as being a really talented cricketer, that everyone at Cornwood will be wishing him the best.
"Hopefully, he can establish himself in the Pakistan side which will be a major achievement as they are a really, fanatically-keen cricket nation.
"A lot of the guys at the club keep in regular contact with Aizaz, who celebrated the birth of his baby boy at Christmas, on skype and social network sites.
"Unfortunately for us if not for Aizaz, his success means we won't be able to get him back for this season.
"But we'll be following his progress in the Test matches as well as the one-day and T20 internationals.
"We couldn't be more pleased or proud – he's a great bloke."
Cheema made a stunning start to his Pakistan Test career on last year's tour of Zimbabwe, at the age of 31.
Cheema's figures of eight for 103 at Bulawayo were the second-best made by a Test debutant for Pakistan.
Cornwood's previous overseas player from 2005 to 2007, Mohammad Salman, made his Test bow for Pakistan in the West Indies after playing for them in the Devon Cricket League.
