A BOSS at a former pole-dancing club has appeared in court accused of allowing performers and customers to touch in breach of its licence.

Manager Anthony Bowman, 49, was summonsed to face Plymouth magistrates to answer allegations he knowingly permitted performers and clients to have physical contact at Divas.

Bowman, of Southway Drive, denied the charge.

He allegedly knowingly allowed 53 "licensable activities" to be carried on, namely physical contact between dancers and customers, at the Union Street club.

The court was told the contact, said to have happened between September and December last year, was not authorised under the licence.

Smartly-dressed Bowman was told a date for a trial before the court would need to be set. The case was adjourned for prosecutors, Bowman and his Liverpool-based solicitors to arrange a date for the hearing.

Bowman was ordered to return to court on September 27 to fix the trial.

Divas was closed in December 2011.

Plymouth City Council has approved an application to reopen the club but the authority said there would be no pole-dancing at the new venue, which is to be called Angels.
