Exeter's the place to be fit
EXETER is the fit and healthy capital of the West, with fewer overweight residents and more green space than Plymouth, Bristol or Torbay.
New figures from the Office of National Statistics show that Exeter is bucking the trend when it comes to obesity. Just 21 per cent of people living in the city are obese, lower than Plymouth (24.5 per cent), Bristol (22.5) and Torbay (23.5).
But city council chiefs are urging residents to keep up the good work and use Exeter's parks, cycle routes, walks and sports fields.
In total, 52 per cent of Exeter is green space — more than Bristol, at 34 per cent, or Plymouth at 42.
Cllr Kevin Mitchell, lead councillor for environment and leisure, said: "Exeter is at the forefront of providing a comprehensive cycle network as part of its role as a cycle demonstration town — one of only six in the country. The city has 24 parks, five valley parks and numerous open spaces, including a Green Circle walking route around the city."
Cllr Mitchell said the council's sports development team worked with schools and clubs to get youngsters to exercise and also grant aids and back sports clubs.
"There's really no excuse for doing nothing," said Cllr Mitchell. "Exeter must be one of the better authorities for providing parks, open spaces and leisure facilities."
