ALICE fever gripped the city last night as excited extras walked up the red carpet at their very own Plymouth premiere-style screening.

Hundreds of people dressed up as white rabbits, playing cards, Alices and mad hatters for Reel cinema's showing of Disney's blockbuster.

And many donned their glad rags wearing full-length gowns, tuxedos and glittering jewellery, bringing glamour to the city.

"It's like the Oscar's have come to Plymouth," said Michael Page from Whitleigh, who played a Victorian gentleman in Tim Burton's 3D adventure.

"This has been the icing on the cake for everyone – we loved walking down the red carpet."

He said that he and his friends were thinking of their friend Tim Rowley who was also an extra but died of cancer before the film's release.

He said: "We are really hoping to see him on the big screen – he would have loved that."

The sell-out screening, which entitled extras to free tickets, saw people from across the city cramming into the Reel foyer, as well as from Callington, Honiton, Cornwood and Albaston.

Jane Guswell from Peverell, said: "It's like we've all been in a bubble since the filming as people drift back into their normal lives, so it's been great to get together with all the other cast members again."

Justin Kinsella, HR manager for Reel, said the evening reminded him of the old days when people would queue right round the building for a film. He said: "People have been so enthusiastic and made such an effort – it's been great to get involved."

“I think its lovely that Reel put on a screening for the extras, though they might not have been the stars of the show, they still put in a lot of hard work, waiting around, hours in make-up, and trying to breathe in corsets. I saw the film and 3D and I liked it, its not amazing but it was good fun. Let the people involved in the film have their moment, it may not be "real news" as someone put it, but its much nicer than hearing about all the doom and gloom. If you want to rant about chavs, then go and read the Sun.”

“Thankyou Reel, for laying on a fun night and free tickets. They didn't have to go to the trouble, but I and the other extras really appreciated it. Just a harmless bit of fun, so the spiteful comments by certain people are unneccesary!
Sad that whenever something even remotely interesting happens in Plymouth, there are plenty of idiots who just want to knock it, and insult Plymouth too. The only saddos and chavs are the ones writing the nasty comments...
Great to see everyone again, I liked the film and would do it all again tomorrow.”
