STRIKER Rory Fallon will sit out Plymouth Argyle's away game against Walsall in League One today (3pm) because of a groin injury.

Manager Peter Reid revealed Fallon had been struggling with the problem since playing for the reserves in their 4-0 defeat away to Swindon Town on Tuesday.

Reid also confirmed Fallon had turned down the chance to sign for League Two club Rotherham United.

Argyle are prepared to let Fallon leave Home Park, but the 28-year-old is thought to be undecided about his future.

There has been speculation one of Fallon's former clubs, Championship outfit Swansea City, could be interested in re-signing him.

Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore, like Reid, comes from Huyton on Merseyside and is someone the Pilgrims' boss has known for a long time.

"They (Rotherham) have been in touch about Rory," explained Reid. "I asked him did he want to go and he said 'no'.

"Unless anything changes, I expect the boy to do his best for us."

Moore wanted to partner Fallon with Rotherham's prolific goalscorer Adam Le Fondre, and has not abandoned hope of taking him to the south Yorkshire club.

"We have had a sniff but he wants to sit tight and see what develops," said Moore.

"I think he is waiting to see whether Swansea come in and that's a shame because I think he would have given us what we want.

"Fallon has started three games for Plymouth but I think he's ready for a change. We will be keeping an eye on the situation."

Fallon

cost Argyle £300,000 when he signed from Swansea in January 2007.

He has since made 132 first team appearances for the Pilgrims and scored 18 goals.

Fallon was substituted by Reid in the first half of Argyle's 1-1 draw against Carlisle United at Home Park last Saturday.

That was because the Pilgrims' boss had been less than impressed with the striker's performance.

Winger Craig Noone is also out of Argyle's clash with Walsall today because of a knee injury he suffered in training on Thursday.

It is not thought the damage is too severe, however.

Meanwhile, Reid has warned he will not tolerate a repeat of the reserves' dismal display against Swindon Town earlier this week.

An experienced Pilgrims' side, including Fallon and Noone, were beaten 4-0 in a Totesport.com Combination clash at the County Ground on Tuesday.

Reid did not make the trip to Wiltshire, with head coach Paul Mariner taking charge of the team.

But, in addition to Mariner's thoughts, Reid had his card marked about the reserves' poor performance by a couple of his contacts within football — and was not impressed with what he was told.

Reid spoke with the players concerned before training at UCP Marjon on Thursday.

"I have dealt with it," said the Pilgrims' boss. "I can take getting beaten, but it was the manner in which we were beaten.

"There are a couple of people I know who rang me up after the game.

"I pride myself on making my teams hard to beat, and trying to be professional and run it right, and then that happens. I wasn't happy at all.

"It's the first and last time it will happen."

Argyle's next Combination match is not until September 14 when they are away to Bournemouth.

So Reid could try to arrange a friendly for the reserves before then.

AS EXPECTED, John Carver has been appointed as Sheffield United's first team coach, ending an eight-month stint at Argyle.

United have agreed a deal for Carver with the Pilgrims, and he will work for new Blades' boss Gary Speed.

Carver, 45, had a contract with Argyle until the summer of 2012.

RUSSIAN Premier League club Krylia Sovetsov are not pursuing any further interest in former Argyle striker Alan Gow.

The 27-year-old, released by the Pilgrims earlier this summer, spent a couple of days on trial with Krylia Sovetsov this week.

“Washed up - this has to be a wind up. Fallon is as useless at passing the ball as he is at everything else on a footballl field.

I guess you're one of these armchair "experts" who never goes to Home Park.”

“I always find it interesting reading the comments on here! Fallons major strength is play making. He's not affraid of passing the ball to fellow teammates to have a crack. Quite admirable I think. Must be very easy to be a little ball greedy at times but Fallon seems to resist the temptation. Fallon has been behind way more than 18 goals and it's time he get's some credit for it. Can't see any comments about his play making or positioning, if I remember rightly he blocked two shots on target against our Southampton win. Not the job of a striker but he was there just like he always is. A solid player who deserves a lot more respect than he gets! Seems theres a lot of very frustrated people who don't really know what they are talking about!!!”

“Can any of the older supporters remember our worse striker ever?? Yes thats right Jimmy Hinch, who coincidentley had a better goals scored record than Rory... I have never, ever doubted Rorys commitment but the fact is he is a very poor player, and I cant see The Swans taking him back as there would be an uproar from the fans. I remember when Holloway signed him,( then did not play him coincidentley) I went on the swans website to see their reaction to him being sold , and they where "OVER THE MOON" he was going.”

“I don't think there was ever a chance that that Rotherham would let us have Adam Le Fondre.

No-one is going to swap a thoroughbred for a donkey.

Can't see Swansea wanting him - the Swansea fans were delighted when they offloaded him to us.

As far as Carver is concerned you can't blame him for leaving. When Burnley tried to take him he was number 2 at a Championship club but now with Adam Sadler a.k.a. Terry McDermott seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order he's now number 4 at a third tier club.”

“18 goals in 132 games says it all really... fallon is an awful player, and should have suited league 2 down to a tee. it's a shame really. and i sincerely hope swansea take him off our hands, sooner rather than later. he's a waste of space and money.”

“Shame on all fronts there really. Quicker Fallon goes the better! Dissapointed that Carver has gone to Sheff Utd after rejecting the chance to go to Newcastle last season..”
