Fairtrade Festival at City College Plymouth
Fairtrade Fortnight has come around once again and second year hospitality and event planning students at City College Plymouth are hosting a Fairtrade Festival to celebrate on Thursday 28 February.
City College Plymouth is a ‘Fairtrade College’, which means that it has made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade. The College continually looks to ensure that Fairtrade products are available in as many places as possible and that they are raising awareness of Fairtrade to both staff and students within the College.
There will be a number of College departments involved in the event including hair and beauty, skills for life and hospitality. There will be live music from local bands, cooking demonstrations, face painting and there will be stalls from national brands including Sainsbury’s and Lush.
Robyn Lockhart, one of the students involved in planning and hosting the event, said: “I personally feel privileged to be involved with the Fairtrade Festival this year. I really want to help other people my own age understand what it is and what a good cause it is.

“We as a group are all extremely thrilled to have the opportunity to plan and host such a brilliant event. We have never planned such a big event before, being given the opportunity to be involved in the planning provides us with invaluable experience which we can take into the workplace. We all understand how stressful it may be but the outcome will definitely be worth it, we really hope we can make a difference.”
Laura Wellington, Sustainability Officer at the College, said: “This important cause helps to promote better prices, develop respectable working conditions, encourage local sustainability and ensure that farmers in developing countries receive fair terms of trade.
“As a result, each year we show our commitment to Fairtrade Fortnight. However, this year we have gone bigger and better - with two weeks of activities planned throughout the College, including the Fairtrade Festival with world music and dancers.”
The Fairtrade Festival is part of College-wide activity to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, which is a national campaign that takes place from Monday 25 February to Sunday 10 March.
