A FAMOUS jazz singer who has performed with Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams and The Who has been teaching boys to sing at a South East Cornwall primary school.

Cleveland Watkiss visited Brunel Primary in Saltash with a mission in mind.

School spokeswoman Claire Pengelly said: "We're a member of SingUp, a national singing programme for schools, and as part of this we were invited to host a boys' singing workshop, aiming to inspire boys and get them singing.

"Cleveland ran the workshop for an hour and a half with the boys, demonstrating jazz singing, particularly scat.

"He also showed the boys how to adapt songs they knew – or didn't – by rewriting the words and creating their own song.

"Members of staff were invited to participate in the workshop as Cleveland demonstrated techniques for teaching warming up, part-singing and scat singing."

Claire added: "It was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to experience a genre of music they are maybe less familiar with.

"Cleveland was so inspiring and engaging that all the boys were full of enthusiasm, even those who often try to avoid singing at all costs.

"They can't wait to get started on their own songwriting and are buzzing with ideas for a forthcoming project.

"They're already singing with great vivacity, and assemblies will never be the same again."
