Feline in the mood for fun?
THE Wranglers Children's Group plan to set the Athenaeum stage into a furry frenzy when they perform the kids' version of Walt Disney's 1970 film The Aristocats today.
This fun-filled tale concerns a family of very superior, upper crust felines, who are left a fortune by their late mistress in her will. However, their butler is a died in the wool baddie. He wants the fortune for himself, and kidnaps the cats.
But fear not. A friendly alley cat, and other assorted moggies, geese and dogs, all band together to ensure a happy ending.
The show is promoted by regular producer Diane Sullivan, with another regular, Wendy Holmes, directing and choreographing the cast of more than 30 youngsters.
It's aimed at a family audience, and contains lots of catchy songs, including the favourite Everyone Wants to be a Cat.
While the company is enthusiastically working on this production, their mood is tinged with anxiety and sadness.
This may be the last show they perform at the Athenaeum Theatre – indeed the last of any shows at that venue, because of its still unresolved future.
Undeterred, they are planning their October musical, Hairspray, and the pantomime Dick Whittington, both of which will be staged at the Muse Theatre at Lipson Community College.
Aristocats ends today. Tickets cost £8, and there are the usual concessions. Seats can be booked through the theatre box office on 01752 266104.
