Fighting Fiction at punk all-dayer
UPWARDLY mobile quartet Fighting Fiction are happy to drive the tortuous coast road from Brighton to Plymouth on Sunday to play the Voodoo Lounge – because they love the punk scene in the city.
"We're on Extra Mile Records, the same label as Crazy Arm," says Jacob Glew, "we are huge fans of theirs – we were honoured to come to play their album launch at the White Rabbit last year – and we're also big fans of Bangers and As We Sink."

DAY OF PUNK: Fighting Fiction are headlining a day of punk at the Voodoo Lounge
Sadly Crazy Arm won't be on the bill this Sunday, but Bangers and As We Sink will, as too will all manner of punk purveyors including Our Time Down Here, Grieved, Rasputin, We Grow Beards, Grazes, The Long Haul, Self Loathing, Some Sort Of Threat and Young Attenborough.
Fighting Fiction will be parading tracks from their eponymous debut album including forthcoming single Turning Rebellion Into Money and heralding single Rock'n'Roll Is Dead And It's Corpse is For Sale, which has already received strong support from Radio 1's Mike Davies.
The album is stuffed with tracks that each pack a mighty powerful punch and are designed to hit you in the head as well as the heart.
"We found out after we had written the tracks that they all unintentionally refer to hypocrisy, in the way people see themselves," says Jacob.
"It actually works well with our band name – which is all about finding your own truth and not taking things at face value."
Recorded and produced by Mark Williams – who has been responsible for Million Dead, Biffy Clyro and Enter Shikari among others – the album captures the band's honesty, integrity and knack for knocking out a great pop punk ditty.
With musical influences from The Clash to Jimmy Eat World, their song content has been succinctly described by The Fly as "upbeat yet disheartened political messages, delivered with a rough, raw, Billy Braggesque brogue".
Already off to a good start on the road, their enthusiastic approach to touring has seen them play alongside Laura Marling, Frank Turner, the Xcerts and they've already enjoyed festival appearances at The Isle of Wight, Reading and Leeds plus 2000Trees.
This year looks like upping the ante and Jacob can't hide his excitement about their debut continental jaunt:
"What I've always wanted is to see the world and discover new cultures off the back of playing music, and with our first tour of Europe starting in April, it looks like it's starting to happen."
Sunday's Punk All Dayer at the Voodoo Lounge, which comes courtesy of Opposite Number Promotions, kicks off at around 3pm. Entry is £5 on the door – and if you bring along cake to share you'll get £1 discount!
