FINISHING touches are being made to a 62ft Celtic cross which will soon be raised at the entrance to the Tamar Bridge after a decade long project to install the iconic structure.

Painting and gilding work is being carried out on the copper-coated, carbon resin and fibre glass structure in a hangar at Newquay Cornwall Airport by Cornish firm Gateguards. Meanwhile, a final layer of concrete has been applied to a plinth near the Tamar Bridge ready for the cross to be craned into position.

“62ft....pah! nothing to brag about...the citizens just a way across the river are getting a 45 metre block of concrete with silly coloured lights and a 95 metre shiny chimney stack.

Bet yours doesn't chuck out 'not proven to be safe' emissions all over Plymouth.

You know its strange how MVV/PCC/SWDWP never answer my question - if the emissions are safe why does the chimney need to be so high to disperse the emissions....why DO they need to be dispersed if safe?

At least there may an element of enjoyment at the sight of your structure - couldn't be further from that emotion for those of us living near what is rising up in front of us.”

“Now that we've decided where it's going, it would've been nice if the Herald had published what they lovingly call, 'an artist's impression' showing what the thing will look like in situ. I'm sure artist Simon Thomas would have been happy to oblige. Full marks for getting the olbigatory 'iconic' in tho'.

    PS
I'm very impressed with Mr Thomas's head of hair. Almost iconic.”

“It is as close to the new incinerator as to Carkeel Roundabout as the crow flies”

“For those of you who are confused by this silly headline, it is definitely going right beside the Tamar Bridge on the north side of the carriageway close to the town centre. This is nowhere near the Carkeel roundabout, which is a nearly 2 miles (and through a tunnel!) away from the Cross site!

ps I suspect they will change the headline in a few hours, making this comment look obsolete - just so you know!”

“Yes, THE HERALD has excelled itself with this story. The headline states the Celtic Cross is heading for Carkeel roundabout, whilst the editorial states it is being erected at the entrance to the Tamar Bridge and finally back at Carkeel roundabout under the photograph.

45p seems a lot of money to pay for cat litter tray lining.”
