The Flava of fulfilment
A HIP HOP dance troupe who featured on ITV's Britain's Got Talent have been working with the police to inspire youngsters in Plymouth with a fun dance workshop.
Cornish dance group Flava ran the 'b Inspired' workshop at Lipson Community College to inspire young people to build confidence through dance techniques.
PC Wayne Marshall, neighbourhood beat manager for the area, said: "Young people often get a bad press but they have so much potential if they're given the right opportunities.
"We hope the students feel inspired to do something they enjoy, whether that's dance, music or any other activity."
Seventy pupils from the school, aged between 11 and 14, were taught how to work with others and how to express themselves in a positive way. One of the routines focused on bullying, with a discussion of its impact it has on people and how it makes victims feel.
Over three days, pupils were also told about other activities in the area and given the chance to tell police officers what sort of thing they would like the opportunity to do.
After the final session on Friday the pupils performed their moves in front of parents and schoolmates.
Principal Paul Boyes said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Lipson students.
"They're all having great fun but, most importantly, gaining confidence and self-esteem through the medium of dance. As a specialist performing arts college, it's brilliant to work in collaboration with our community police and the outstanding dance group Flava. This experience will provide students with key skills and attributes they can take out into the wider curriculum and their life."
Flava's founder Kyle Richardson said: "We want kids to look to us as positive role models and show them that if they put their mind to something they can achieve so much. We work hard, but it's a lot of fun and we really enjoy what we do.
"Hopefully we'll inspire other kids to want to do the same."
