The village was swamped with water in December, leaving many residents and business owners facing huge clean-up bills.

A flood defence plan was originally designed to come into force after April 2014, but yesterday Plymouth City Council, South West Water and the Environment Agency agreed in principle to bring it forward.

South West Devon MP Gary Streeter said work could begin in October this year. He said: "I am very encouraged that all of the agencies concerned appreciate the seriousness of the flooding situation in Colebrook and are determined to put in place a viable solution at the earliest possible moment."
