A FOOTBALL fan with a long list of previous convictions has been banned from matches for three years by a judge.

Wayne Brownlow, aged 38, who has convictions for offences including assault and affray, was made subject to a Football Banning Order at Plymouth Magistrates' Court.

Brownlow, of Westcountry Close in Weston Mill, did not contest the application by the police and did not attend court.

Lucy Seymour, for Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, submitted a file of evidence of previous convictions and police statements to district judge Paul Farmer.

Brownlow's convictions include one for assault causing actual bodily harm in 1991, for threatening behaviour in 1994 and for possession of an offensive weapon in 1997.

John Haythorne, for Brownlow, said he accepted the order and asked for it to be kept to the minimum period of three years.

The order bans Brownlow from entering Central Park on Argyle home match days, or travelling anywhere the Pilgrims are playing on the day of an away game.

He is also banned from entering Exeter or Torquay when their football teams are playing at home, and any city where England's national team has an away match.

“Strange thing the old football violence, these days. Grounds are safe in general, and fans are well behaved. Yet things like banning orders are relatively rife.

The article doesn't actually say what crime Mr Brownlow had actually committed, therefore, on the basis of previous Herald reports, the crime seems to be, being boisterous and potentially being a hooligan.

This in turn leads to other questions, why is it onl football fans that receive this sort of treatment? Why, for example, could convicted paedophiles be free to travel abroad and potentially commit crimes whilst others cannot.

It seems an odd state of affairs, slightly like an ASBO but without actually committing crime.”
