A PLYMOUTH street which has been closed off to the public for 53 years is being handed back to the community.

Fore Street in Devonport was behind the dockyard wall as part of the South Yard Enclave, but has now been redeveloped.

Redrow is transforming the former MoD owned site in Devonport.

Historically, Fore Street was a major thoroughfare and its prominence is well documented.

It was once the main highway from Plymouth to the Royal Dockyard, as can be seen on the map of Plymouth Dock 1810.

Its’ importance grew in line with Plymouth dockyard's expansion, the impressive Sailor’s Rest was situated on Fore Street.

During the blitz Fore Street was severely bombed and after the war it was still an important thoroughfare.

On Monday, June 1 1959, Fore Street was closed to all traffic, as it was taken inside the new extension of the Royal Dockyard owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Today, it has been returned to the community once more, central to Redrow’s Vision Development.

Barry Stiles, Regional Director Redrow Homes, said: "It is amazing to see the photos of Fore Street in its heyday. After being closed to the public for over 50 years everyone at Redrow is very proud to be handing it back to the community.

"It is great to see the area undergoing a renaissance that will see Fore Street become an important part of the community once more.”"

Homes at the Vistion development are already up for sale with one bed apartments available from £94,995; three and four bedroom houses available from £158,995.

“What a missed opportunity to put a heart back into Devonport. This is sadly typical of the characterless, sub-Lego rubbish that's considered good enough for Plymouth by profiteering property developers.”

“Like the houses being built in North Prospect, Barn Barton and even in St Budeaux on the old Fellowship site, painted in bright colours and poorly built, primary colours used as the council think it appeal to average man and woman in the street? Orwells 1984 has finally come in 2012, bland newspeak buildings.”

“Pity they couldn't put it back as a thriving shopping street like it was before Hitler got hold of it.”

“If these properties are anything like the properties in and around Ker street they are so poorly built and finished they will be slums in less than 20 years and will need rebuilding and redeveloping yet again, what is it about Plymouth that builders and developers think they can get away with such shoddy rubbish?”

“the properties are tiny and crammed in, over priced and shoddily built.”

You could buy a house for that.”
