CIVIL War re-enactors mustered yesterday to mark one of the most pivotal battles to take place on English soil.

The event was held to mark the 369th anniversary of the Battle of Freedom Fields.

It is said the battle was one of the most important in England's past; had Plymouth's Parliamentarian garrison not been able to keep the Royalist army out of the city, the country's history could have been very different.

About 200 Royalists died in the battle, compared with just two dozen Parliamentarians, but during December 1643 around 400 people altogether died of their wounds, infections or the plague.

The battle, also known as the Sabbath Day Fight, took place on December 3, 1643.

The city's men – many just citizens, up against professional soldiers – fought off the attack, keeping Plymouth the only Parliamentarian stronghold in the South West.

The fight has been remembered every year since 1945 and yesterday Sealed Knot re-enactors replayed the battle.
