THE Herald's Sports Personality Awards 2008 are up and running – and last year's winner has been meeting with the sponsors.

Olympic diver Tom Daley is one of the contenders to retain his title, but five other athletes also inspired with their performances in Beijing. The final decision, which will be revealed at an awards ceremony at The Pavilions on December 1, is up to readers of The Herald.

Proceeds from the ceremony will go towards Plymouth Sports Forum's 'Making a Difference' campaign, helping grassroots sport in the city in the lead-up to London 2012.

This is something that sponsor Keith White, co-owner of Michael Spiers Jewellers, feels passionate about.

Mr White, also managing directors of the Cornwall Street jewellers, said: "So many children are talented at sports and they need to be supported and have financial backing. Following their dreams can put a lot of strain on parents' finances so anything that can be done to help is great.

"I'm delighted to be involved – we sponsored the event last year and it was a great success."

Mr White, a keen squash player and amateur sportsman himself, wouldn't be drawn on his own tip to triumph in this year's competition.

He added: "It's amazing how well this city has done at sport over the last year. Tom Daley, for instance, is seventh in the world and that's as a junior.

"Obviously you've got to look at our Olympians as contenders for the award but I wouldn't want to bet on anyone to win it – they and others all deserve it.

"But they've all been absolutely great ambassadors – not only for Plymouth but for Great Britain."

Tom Daley hoped The Herald's readers all got involved because it gave local athletes a real boost.

He said: "When I found out I won last year it was so unexpected – I really didn't expect to win. It's quite overwhelming that your performance is recognised and it's good to get a reward back for all the work you put in.

"Of course I'd love to win it again. It's a real nice local present that Plymouth gives you. But if I wasn't to win I would very much understand because of Heather Fell [Tavistock modern pentathlete who won silver at Beijing], Cassie Patten [former Plymouth Leander swimmer who won bronze], Tonia Couch [Olympic diver at Beijing] and Michaela Breeze [Olympic weightlifter]

"It'd be good if the whole of Plymouth showed their support for all the athletes. I think everybody should nominate all the Olympic athletes."
