A grand prix theme at male health event
A CHEQUERED flag marks the start of a series of events over the weekend – including a visit by a full size replica Formula 1 racing car to the city centre.
The car will be based in Armada Way on Saturday and Sunday and members of the public will be invited to handle air guns, compressors, overalls and with the digital clock ticking away take part in a pit stop challenge.
This – together with a series of other free events – are being staged to celebrate Men's Health Week in Plymouth.
As part of the activities the British Grand Prix qualifying event will be broadcast on the big screen.
On Saturday there will also be football fun, on-stage Army fitness and cookery demonstrations and comedy from top stand-up John Ryan.
Other attractions include a gardening area, wood turning and therapists on hand for a head, neck and shoulder massage, prizes for top challengers and a grand prize draw.
These activities will run from 10am to 5pm.
And on Sunday the public is invited to follow all the action live from Silverstone on the Big Screen from 1pm.
Cllr Glenn Jordan, Plymouth City Council cabinet member for leisure, culture and sport, said: "We're really pleased to be working alongside NHS Plymouth, the City Centre Company and the Army on this event in support of Men's Health Week.
"There will be loads to do and see on the day, including the Grand Prix on the Big Screen, and lots of useful information about healthy living and staying active."
Steve Waite, NHS Plymouth chief operating officer, said: "Unfortunately many men don't like asking for help and advice but if we want to live life to the full we need to.
"The events are geared towards the particular needs of men and should be fun too."
NHS research shows men are more likely to suffer from a number of conditions including heart disease, cancer and depression but women visit doctors 50 per cent more often than men.
Free health MOTs will also be available at the event.
