A ROAD was closed for more than an hour after reports of a serious gas leak.

Police were called to Hooe Road, in Plymstock, at about 10.30pm on Tuesday after reports of a "funny smell" believed to be gas. Residents were asked to stay inside and officers closed the road from Hooe Road shops to the Victoria Inn.

Wales and West Utilities sent an engineer to the scene who arrived at about 11pm, police said. A spokesperson for the utility company said: "We were alerted to the smell of gas on Hooe Road, Plymstock, on Tuesday evening and immediately sent an engineer.

"Our engineer carried out a thorough investigation but found no trace of gas leaking from our network."
