Gay Pride returns to Plymouth on Saturday with its first outdoor festival, in the recently restored Devonport Park.

The new Heritage Lottery Funded ornate bandstand will provide the main stage and central focal point for more than six hours of free live entertainment.

Pride in the Park will bring members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans communities (LGBT) together, along with their friends and families.

Miss Alexus, Plymouth’s first resident Drag Queen, returns to Plymouth to host Pride in the Park and is introducing a line up of acts and entertainers.

The Youth Chances organisation will be at the event, enabling 16 to 25 year olds in the city to participate in the UK’s national survey to establish what life is like today for young LGBT or questioning people and also ‘Being You’ will be offering drumming workshops throughout the day.

Visit Oxford will also be in attendance and have provided the top raffle prize of an all-inclusive, four-star stay in Oxford.

The Pride in Our Past volunteers, who were responsible for the recent LGBT exhibition in the city museum and are creating a virtual archive of LGBT life, past and present for the city of Plymouth, will be at Pride in the Park when they team up with the Plymouth and West Devon Record office to provide a local history tent.

“I tell you what I'm sick of.
When you want to use an isolated rural public toilet and there are lots of men hanging round who are looking at photos of old buses.
    I find that really uncomfortable”

“josdave how is it `thrust down your throat` were you forced to attend? Theres lots of events held by certain groups of people....for instance there was a gathering of historic bus lovers on the hoe the other day.....but I dont see you complain about that do you? what about the non historic bus lovers eh? whens the event going to be for them? see how moronic your argument is?”

“How about some funding for events for normal heterosexual people or don't wed count? I do not have a problem with homosexual people but I do care when it is thrust down my throat by events like this. What makes them so special in the eyes of councils?”

    “@ niugnepyzarc

I'm not whining,as you'll see if you read what I actually said.I just feel that it didn't need to be that loud given the number of residences around the park and the relatively small area the event took up.
The swearing was unwelcome for the reasons I've already stated.
Why complain about this particular event? Because it was the one that affected me and my neighbours,no other reason.”

“fazer it was a big event in an outdoor location, how do you propose they stop the soundwaves in mid air to stop you hearing it? theres lots of events of such nature that happen in plymouth, yet this one gets whined about above all others? wonder why! lol”

    “@blogtodi

I didn't go to the event.I live half a mile away but the volume was such that I heard the whole thing quite clearly in its entirety.
I can put up with that for a few hours if others are enjoying themselves but hopefully those wanting consideration from others will show a bit more themselves next time.
The deliberate swearing,as opposed to a bit of mild stuff that "slipped out" earlier was from one person towards the end.Hopefully he will be big enough to apologise, not least to the organisers who he let down.Only a few days before this event youths were spoken to by the Police in the same park for using similar language and disturbing others.
If it had been in some kind of venue with only adults in the vicinity it would be one thing,in a park with a kiddies play area and flats all around on a sunny summer evening it was out of order.”

“@ fazer58 - I didn't go to the event so I rely on your reporting. If this is the standard of their 'gay days', and it doesn't surprise in the least, then perhaps somewhere more remote next time.
I think this event was for the more fundamentalist gay types, not the majority. Judging by the language you report, it seems likely.
perhaps an apology from the organisers would be appropriate?”

“I'm all for equality and people making choices.
However it would have been nice if I'd had the choice of listening to the event at Devonport Park today.I didn't,it was imposed on the local population loud and clear all afternoon. If you lived close to the park and didn't really want to hear the best efforts of some pretty average entertainers or constant plugging of Hawkins Bar that was just tough.I'm sure those in the park could have heard quite clearly if the volume had been turned down a bit while those of us really not interested would have been spared..
The language was hardly suitable for an early evening event either, one male entertainer seemed to think broadcasting a song repeatedly using the "F" word around Albert Road and Exmouth Road was a good idea, sounded like the same person telling someone "if you don't like it **** off".
I have no issue with the organisers or anyone who attended but a little more consideration would have been nice.and the language wasn't necessary either,it's a public park and there are plenty of kids in the area as well as adults who really don't want to hear that (overly)loud and clear.”
