The GOVERNMENT is considering axing warships and helicopters and disbanding the iconic 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, a highly-regarded military journal has claimed.

An armed forces campaign group claimed the UK is heading for “disarmament in all but name” following reports in Jane’s Defence Weekly.

The periodical’s claims, which would have huge implications for the Westcountry, come as ministers consider more military cuts during a three-month review of spending.

The magazine says the Royal Navy’s surface fleet could be scaled back to just 12 frigates and destroyers from a 19-strong flotilla at present.

Devonport Naval Base, the base for seven Type 23 frigates, is also home to an amphibious fleet of three warships.

Jane’s also floats the prospect of abolishing 3 Commando Brigade, a move that would prove deeply unpopular in military circles.

Halving the order for 12 Chinook helicopters to just six and buying cheaper Army vehicles are also on the table, the magazine claims.

It is alleged RAF fast jets would also fall to “well under 100” from the force of 210.

The UK National Defence Association (UKNDA), which campaigns for the UK’s military, said under the plans the forces would be on “red alert”.

Last week, Armed Forces Minister Nick Harvey admitted “further savings” have been identified amid claims the MoD is “scrambling” to find £8 billion. At the weekend, reports put the gap at at least £10 billion.

Mr Harvey, Liberal Democrat MP for North Devon, told MPs: “It is certainly the case we were left with the need to find more savings and that we have been spending our time in recent months identifying further savings – and we have been able to.”

It has been suggested by MPs that the financial gap military officials are looking to fill has soared from £1billion to nearer £8billion since October’s strategic defence and security review (SDSR).

Of the Jane’s article, UKNDA director John Muxworthy said: “The Government has U-turned on its NHS policy but by sticking to its ill-conceived SDSR and ongoing defence cuts against the advice of the military experts.

“It looks like the next patient on the NHS critical list will be our nation’s Armed Forces.”

An MoD spokesman said it would be too early to comment on the outcome of the three-month review, which ends this month.

The Ministry of Defence last month admitted the three-month study had opened to look at balancing “defence priorities and the budget over the long-term”.

“Very amusing! Get rid of the best Commando Forces in the world just to save money, not even an
    option! If you want to save money and get rid of an organisation that is 'neither use nor ornament';
get rid of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.

    Semper Fi!”

“Just because you need to save money doesn't mean you have to sell your military hardware. There are lots of other places to make cuts. The MOD employs a large amount of office staff, a lot of them actually redundant as far as usefulness goes. Usage of resources in office environments is also woefully inefficient, from paying double the lowest price for their paper to using twenty times as much due to a significant amount of red tape.

The spending cuts are necessary, but where the money is proposed to come from is downright stupid. The requirement is to reduce spending by "x amount", however the decision is made by people in offices, the same people that waste a significant amount of money. Sometimes not by fault, they may be doing their job as best as they are able, but someone somewhere is doing the exact same job, when you only need one. In other cases it's a case of poorly allocated resources - like when the Government department set up to ensure the government gets value for money was spending 50-100% more on paper than they needed to.

Now what paper-pusher in their right mind will turn around and say "We need to cut our office staff, myself included"? In this economic climate? Probably nobody. However, there are some cuts which simply cannot be made, and the extensive axing of our military presence is one of them. Grow a pair and admit your job is not worth the security of our nation (or lack of).”

“every year a paper exercise is carried out to see how much it would cost to wind up the corps. return trucks hand back barracks and pay off the troops. it has never happened last time i was aware this exercise was serious the falklands kicked off and what happened then.
it will never happen perhaps the corps will absorbed into a larger organisation. but who would want to be in the rlc (rather large corps) better the paras went

“These Defence cuts are all aimed at this country merging with EU forces, to bring about one large defence system run by those unelected money grabbing MSP's in Brussels. They are hell bent on ruining our country, and to ensuring our subservience to the EU. I f they can't break us one way they will try another untill they do.”
