Plymouth's army of gritting lorries will be out in force from 6.30pm tonight ahead of a drop in temperature which could see city roads covered in ice.

Plymouth City Council's contractor Amey will grit all the primary routes at 6.30pm and then all the secondary routes at 8pm.

Main routes where there is standing water left ober from the weekend's floods are neing gritted in the morning - including Cot Hill.

The weather is forecast to be dry and cold this evening and road surface temperatures are set to drop below freezing.

Stretches where the roads are still wet are likely to freeze overnight, and there is also likely to be a general frost.

All the routes will be inspected at 5.30am tomorrow.

Gritters have already been out on Devon roads today with 20 per cent of the county's network gritted ahead of a forecast freeze.

    “well it was icy on the car this morning, so I suppose all your weather forcasts were incorrect, good job your not in charge of gritting our streets then...
    Sensationalist story??? Seemed like more of a public service update story really, I would imagine the herald got it's info from the council or amey when they phoned them to inform them of their plans, bit obvious really, to let people know the gritters would be out trying to keep the roads ice free.”

    “The gritter looks like its one of Ameys, this company is Health and Safety mad, why is that what appears to be the driver stood on the side of the gritter whilst it is being loaded,if thats not one breach of health and safety what about the driver not wearing ANY ppe ,a accident waiting to happen”
