CAMPAIGNERS with learning disabilities have scooped a Lottery grant to create a fire safety film.

Plymouth People First successfully bid for £9,100 from the Big Lottery's Awards for All scheme.

The group are making a fire awareness DVD with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and POV Production Company.

They plan to launch the film during Learning Disability Week in June, and aim to promote it nationwide.

Plymouth People First is a self advocacy organisation within the Plymouth Highbury Trust.

It enables groups of adults with learning disabilities to speak up and campaign over a range of issues.

Jill Singh, Highbury Trust self advocacy project officer, said: "We worked closely with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service during 2011 and realised the need for an accessible film to reaffirm the important messages of fire prevention and safety.

"The DVD, planned by and starring adults with a learning disability, will provide advice for all vulnerable community members when it is launched in Plymouth and then promoted through the fire service nationwide."

The DVD will cover how to call the fire service, how to plan an escape from a building that is on fire, how to book a home safety check and how to identify potential fire risks at home.

Plymouth People First has more than 100 members and holds groups across the city.

In the past few years, the group has achieved a number of successes, including campaigning for improved wheelchair access on buses, and creating a DVD encouraging vulnerable adults to report abuse.

The Big Lottery Fund distributes half of the National Lottery good cause funding across the UK. The fund aims to enable others to make real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need.
