A PLYMOUTH man charged with pointing an imitation handgun at armed police in a city park has been found hanged in his cell.

Jason Rose, of Mount Gould Road, Mount Gould, was set to appear at Plymouth Crown Court next month to answer the charge of possession of an imitation Glock automatic with intent to cause fear of violence.

However his body was found hanging in his cell at Exeter Prison shortly after 10am on Tuesday.

Rose was being held at the prison on remand until the plea and case management hearing at Plymouth Crown Court on September 26.

A rapid response vehicle and ambulance from South Western Ambulance Service were called to the prison where they attempted to resuscitate the 24-year-old man.

He was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Rose was arrested at around 12.30am on June 17 after police received an anonymous call from a member of the public saying a man had been seen in Mount Gould Road with a gun, shouting that he was going to shoot people.

Armed officers were immediately dispatched to the area and shortly afterwards found Rose at the bandstand area of Freedom Fields Park brandishing a black handgun.

It was alleged by the Crown Prosecution Service at his second court hearing that Rose had pointed the imitation firearm at the armed police officers.

The Prison Service have confirmed that Rose was not on suicide watch, a decision which would have been taken by senior staff at Exeter Prison.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "HMP Exeter prisoner Jason Rose was found hanging in his cell at 10am on Tuesday August 2.

"Staff and paramedics attended, and Mr Rose was taken to outside hospital, but was pronounced dead at 11am.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."

“I just found out about this from his brother, I cannot believe this, he was such a good guy. I am disgusted at the way they called Jason a "gunman" and things they have wrote. I have known Jason since about 7 years ago, he has always been kind and caring to others. My prayers go out to him and his family. R.I.P Jason....Gone but not forgotten, we will see you again one day and we miss you xoxox”

“I met Jason on a few occasions & he always struck me as a very genuine person. It's clear that this was in fact the case by all the love & support that he has received from the people that knew him best. The way in which this article portrays his final moments is insulting to his memory (given the circumstances the headline is probably the most disgusting thing I have ever read) & I advise all viewers to look past the sensationalism above & read an accurate account of what happened in the comment posted by his father below. Simply by reading the comments you can see how important he was to his friends & family & how much he will be missed by them. RIP”

“My heart and deepest sympathies go out to all of Jason's family and friends x

I was shocked to learn of this tragic end to such a talented life. I was also shocked and apalled to read this article and the journalists portrayal of a man that was not the Jason we knew. It's disgraceful how this tragic story has been sensationalised for media effect without the slightest respect or concern for the hurt amongst family and friends.

I am also saddened by the negative comments from people who were never fortunate enough to have met Jason and are basing their opinions on pure media sensationalism.

RIP to the bright, warm, cheeky smiling Jason I knew from childhood, hope you are now at peace.

    Char x”

“May I as Jason's father say a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have posted positive comments about my late son on this website. Some of the lovely comments, from those of you who knew my late son have moved me greatly. Such messages have helped me and other members of our family in dealing with his untimely death.

May I also say thank you to those of you who have defended my son and those of you who have pointed out to those who posted negative comments, the error of their ways. It is so warming and comforting to know my son had such a wonderful collection of friends.

    Thank you all.

    Chris Rose (father of Jason)”

The word was auto moderated because of the first two letters

This is a safety process in case anyone decides to pop up a ton of swear words whilst the moderator is in kip

I will put a word here and see if it happens - the word is something you would get from a car exhaust pipe and may be auto moderated or not.

    FUME Anything happen?

“My thoughts are with this lads family and friends at this time. Lots of kids make mistakes many because they are in a bad place in ther life at that time and are looking for help I know from experience that doing something stupid to get yourself caught in the missguided belief you will then get help is sometimes the only option that young people see. It is a sad reflection on society that however hard some people ask for help the doors are often slamed in there face. Perhaps if more help was put in place for kids that loose there way at an earlier point sad stories like this would not happen.”

“This is clearly a very sad time for his family.
But why do people have this need for guns, albeit imitations or real, the Police from a distance cannot tell the difference and he was very lucky that a similar incident did not occur as we saw in London earlier in the week.
Likewise once again if informed by his family where were the medical or social services help.”
