THE body of a young male found in the River Tamar is "likely" to be missing teenager Jordan Cobb, police have said.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the 16-year-old's family have been informed of the discovery, which was made at about 5pm yesterday. The MoD police were contacted by a member of the public over marine band radio saying they had seen a body in the water.

An MoD launch and Coastguards were sent to the area specified – on the Torpoint side of the river close to where the ferry docks – and a body was recovered.

It was taken to the nearby dockyard for examination.

Detective Inspector Nick West told The Herald: "We believe it is likely to be Jordan Cobb, but that is still yet to be confirmed with the coroner."

Jordan has not been seen since he jumped from a ferry travelling from Plymouth to Torpoint on New Year's Eve. Police are investigating whether the teenager jumped for a £100 bet.

Last night Carol Hannaford, principal of Jordan's school, Stoke Damerel Community College, was on the Plymouth side of the ferry crossing with other members of staff and about a dozen of Jordan's friends.

She said: "Some of Jordan's best friends have been here responding to the news.

"It has been a very traumatic time since New Year's Eve for Jordan's mum and brothers and friends.

"It has been devastating."

She added: "At least if it is Jordan then the uncertainty is over.

"We have just got to pay tribute to his friends and family who are here for him always."

Jordan's former girlfriend, Savanah Rich, 16, posted on Facebook last night: "Please be the truth this time.

"Everybody needs closure and to be able to start grieving.

"I need it to be you Jord for everyone's sake because this waiting game is too hard to keep going."

Hundreds of emergency services personnel, along with Jordan's friends and family, spent more than a week intensively searching the river, the river banks, coves and the seashore after he disappeared.

Police, the MoD, divers, helicopters, the RNLI and Dartmoor Search and Rescue were among those involved.

Last week police praised the ongoing efforts of friends and family to being Jordan home.

Chief Superintendent Chris Singer said: "The quiet determination that has been shown here to try and find Jordan and take him home to his loved ones is testament not only to the fact that this tragedy has touched a large number of people, but also to the professionalism displayed by the partner agencies involved.

An online donation page set up to help in the search for Jordan Cobb has raised more than £1,600.

Twitter and Facebook groups were also set up to spread the message about the search for Jordan.

“But his headphones and htc phone and trainers would amount to more money than the £100 bet, so to think Jordan did this for a dare is questionable and i guess due to this there is further investigations taking place”

    “To smith8.

    I've as you suggested.

I found no comments made by commuters regarding drugs/alcohol. Please could you be more specific? Where have you seen these comments?

I have also read all the press articles since this tragic story was first reported on the 1st January, again, nothing there to suggest there was alcohol/drugs involved. Again can you be more specific?

You also made a claim, it was reported in the press, there was evidence on Jordan's Facebook page containing evidence of alcohol and drug abuse. Again, I have read EVERY article and there has been NO mention of you claim. Once again, can you be more specific?”

“OMG Trash bag you are full of it! Looks like you have bought yourself a dictionary at long last! To be honest Hun there is no way on earth that anyone would believe that you have been to Uni! We do not need to do experiments on each indiviual within their environment as the way has already been paved. You change your mind every other second once you've read up on certain studies which are totally irrelevant. Well done you but you're still not getting the point are you? If you read about the inquest you will note that Jordan jumped in the water for a dare whilst still wearing his mobile ear phones. So please explain to me how the pack mentality does not apply here. They aren't a pack of Wolves and they weren't attempting to avoid a predator. This was a teenage peer pressure joke that went very wrong whilst the kids were in a group egging him on. So you and Trotter want evidence of my opinions of alcohol consumption/drug abuse? I would suggest that you go through the comments made by commuters who were caused to avoid the kids whilst putting their own families at risk”

“Agree with Trotter- Smith answer the question , please do so,as you have so much to say for yourself and it is really disrespectful to have commented about Jordan and friends on this particular article, which shows you have no empathy for others.
And soul dude I will when he apologises to family, and friends and all others affected by this awful tragedy. until then .........”

    “To Smith83
Yes I did bring education in to it, but I believe I explained why in a previous post. (Please read again).

Agreed, people are allowed to have their own opinions but as I previously stated, unlike youself, I like to base my opinions on facts rather that unproven gossip and assumptions.

I have had no negative feed back from people who disagree with me apart from you, but if I had, then of course they to are entitled to their opinion.

I have to disagree that I thrive on the misfortune of others. I made a comment on the site to pass on my condolences to a bereaved family. While doing this, I came across your, in my opinion, nasty uncalled for gossip spreading comment and then asked you on what information had based your conclusion on. I can assure you, there is no motive.

Over the course of our correspondence, you have claimed to have read in press articles, this group of boys had used drink/and or drugs during the course of the evening.
I have asked you for details of these particular articles, but still you have not replied to my request.

Instead you have just continued with insults.

Please can I ask, if you are going to reply to this post, which I'm sure you will, before you start picking holes in my spelling etc etc, could you please first give me the details of the article you have based your version of events on New Years Eve.”

“"Pack mentality goes back to our innate behavior as animals. When mammals hunt in packs, they gain safety in numbers, and are able to deflect attention from themselves in the event that they are 'caught' by a bigger predator"..... really do not see how you can relate this to recent events.
Maybe it is your innate animal instinct that brought you to this ridiculous conclusion.
    Facts Smith Facts.... then comment”
