THE chairman of St Luke's Hospice is encouraging people to donate as much as they can to The Herald's Fund A Nurse campaign.

The campaign, which launched yesterday, hopes to raise £30,000 to pay for Julie Davies, pictured, a St Luke's Specialist Nurse, for another year.

St Luke's Hospice in Plymstock has been caring for thousands of terminally-ill patients from across Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall for 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the past 30 years.

And now The Herald and the local hospice, one of the city's oldest charity's, are joining forces and urging the public to raise the money needed to support even more people within our community.

Stuart Elford, chairman of St Luke's Hospice, said: "The Fund A Nurse campaign is fantastic and it's great that The Herald has recognised that a place like St Luke's needs all the help it can get.

"People sometimes think that because it has been there for 30 years, it will automatically be there for another 30 years, but that's not the case.

"We have 250 staff and 1,500 volunteers who work across multiple platforms. The hospice can't survive without such support as The Herald is giving it.

"Nurses are definitely at the frontline of what we do. They can help people who may need to be admitted into the hospice but they can also help those who can be cared for at home. It's about giving people the right care, at the right place, at the right time.

"And that's why this nurse campaign is so vital. One in five people will need the support of St Luke's at some point in their lives and sadly that means that everyone knows or will know someone who has used or will need the service."

St Luke's looks after people with serious illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure, multiple sclerosis and chronic lung disease.

Last year the team made over 4,000 visits to patients in their homes – not bad for a team of just 12 people.

With your help we aim to raise enough money to pay for Julie to continue her crucial care in our community.
