Helping the retired through tax maze
I WAS sorry to hear of the problems that Bill Hatherley (May 16) has been having with HMRC.
I am a tax professional and deal with HMRC on a daily basis. This is often a frustrating process for someone like me, so I can imagine how difficult it is for an older member of the public to work their way through the maze that is HMRC. It sounds (due to his responses to the SAF2 form) as if Bill really shouldn't be in the self-assessment system. Once HMRC can be convinced of this, the tax returns that they have requested can be cancelled and this would then lead to the cancellation of the various penalties that have been imposed. I wish you luck Bill.
There is a group that might be of assistance to retired readers in circumstances like this. It is called TOP (TaxHelp for Older People). This group is run by more than 700 volunteers around the UK and gives free professional advice on personal tax to older people (with household incomes below £17,000) who could not otherwise afford to pay for it.
They can be contacted by phone on 0845 601 3321, via email on taxvol@taxvol.org.uk or in writing to Pineapple Business Park, Salway Ash, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 5DB.

“I get greatly p****ed off by our old folk missing out on their entitlements or not understanding the red tape and twisted claptrap presented to them, maybe in the hope that they will give up and not bother. Immigrants illegal or otherwise are sat down and presented with their entitlements, many of which are greater than ours, so why cannot our pensioners be told in plain english of their entitlements or be given them on reaching the appropriate age.”
