A MAN has had a hip operation and is awaiting a shoulder procedure after being knocked over by a mobility scooter, police said.

A 61-year-old casualty sustained "serious" injuries" when he walked out of a Plymco Co-operative store on Embankment Road on Monday afternoon and was hit by a 57-year-old woman on a motorised buggy. There is no suggestion of any wrong-doing.

The Plymco store was sealed off for around two hours while officers from the serious collisions unit carried out an investigation following the incident. PC Stu Moseley, of the Serious Collisions Unit, said the injured man was taken by ambulance to Derriford Hospital and on Tuesday spent five hours in theatre while his hip was operated on.

He said the man would be detained at Derriford for several more days waiting for a shoulder operation and recovering.

“It could have been any of us (or a child) stepping out of a shop door and getting hit.
The law says 4 mph is the maximum allowed for scooters on pavements, so let's hope witnesses come forward to say if the limit was being observed..”
