Housing tragedy

IT cannot be right that developers dictate the agenda regarding the city's infrastructure.

Additional housing and yet another supermarket is something we definitely do not need on either the airport or the quadrant site at Derriford roundabout. Both developers, be it Sutton Harbour Holdings or Wharfside Regeneration, have no long-term interest in Plymouth's future. They build, sell, then move on to the next opportunity.

Plymouth needs long-term investment providing real jobs for the future. Most city residents would prefer to retain the airport; if this is not possible in the short term, the land has to be retained for reopening in the future.

Building more poor quality housing like the appalling examples already erected on the 504k part of the airport would be a tragedy. This is a disgraceful waste of a greenfield site.

The A386 is already gridlocked at daily commute times and the B3432 overloaded, too, without an additional 1,000-plus dwellings being built in the area they serve.

Do our political leaders have a long-term vision for the city, or are we to become just a vast housing estate sitting on the banks of the Tamar?

“blogtodi.........an unfair question, because there would be no increase in council tax.you could ask 'do you support a city airport',but it would be a waste of time and money as the answer would be a resounding YES,as you know full well or you would not have presented your loaded and dishonest question.”

“I agree you cannot keep building at this level without major structural changes to the road infrastructure...Its sheer madness and will gridlock this city....But, common sense has long left this Council. There decisions are storing up major problems for the future of this city”

“Quote - 'Most city residents would prefer to retain the airport.'

They do? Where's the proof of that? I would argue that MOST city residents don't care one way or the other and only a small minority support the airport.

How about a local referendum with the question - 'Would you support a city airport and be happy for an increase in your council tax to subsidise it?'

    Now that would be interesting...”
