Freezing temperatures will be felt across the region with people being advised to take care and monitor forecasts before going outside.

The Exeter-based Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow in Devon on Friday.

A band of rain will push into the west into Friday morning, turning increasingly to sleet and snow.

Met Office spokesman Dan Williams said: "The real talking point is the band of weather coming from the Atlantic interacting with cold air.

"That will come down as rain across Cornwall and parts of Devon, but there is the chance of snow on higher ground and in East Devon."

"The heavy rain could disrupt travelling conditions. We would advise people to exercise caution."

Steve Crosthwaite, head of the Highways Agency's National Traffic Operations Centre said: "We advise drivers to check road conditions and the Met Office weather forecast before they set off and during severe weather to consider whether their journey is essential."

Saturday is expected to remain largely dry with the possibility of some showers, but forecasters warn ice will continue to be a risk especially at night.

“For the avoidance of doubt, ignore the headline and read the detail "That will come down as rain across Cornwall and parts of Devon, but there is the chance of snow on higher ground and in East Devon." So they are not forecasting snow in Plymouth.”

“Actually, if you check the Met Office forecast, you'll see that the forecast for Plymouth on Friday is 'rain', not snow. Some easterly areas of the region may get snow, but none is due to fall in Plymouth.”
