Incinerator exhibition pulls in the public
MORE than 200 people turned up to view an exhibition to learn more about plans for a new incinerator to dispose of the region's residual waste.
Interested local people and residents visited the Guildhall in Plymouth to ask questions about the proposals, including the potential locations, technology and timescale for the 'energy from waste' plant, generally known as an incinerator, which will treat the region's waste, diverting it from going into landfill.
The event, which was staged by the South West Devon Waste Partnership (SWDWP), was a brief update prior to a series of roadshows across the region in November.
These will provide further details about the shortlisted solutions proposed for the region's waste disposal problems.
The exhibition also included information about Devonport, which has now been identified as one of the potential sites for an incinerator.
Mark Turner, the SWDWP project director, said: "It's been so heartening to see so many people interested in the project.
"We have had some very valuable feedback and it has been useful to allay some people's concerns," he said.
"We are looking forward to doing a much broader series of exhibitions around the region in November," said Mr Turner.
"No site has been chosen yet as we are investigating the viability of the proposals before we can shortlist."
Three bidders proposing five solutions in total have been selected by the partnership to go through to the next stage.
The proposed solutions cover sites at Ernesettle, Devonport and New England Quarry, south of Lee Mill.
The South West Devon Waste Partnership comprises Plymouth City Council, Torbay Council and Devon County Council.

“Better the lorries are taking gash to be incinerated than just dumped though. The pollution argument is unfounded also. Filtration techniques nowadays are quite efficient. Ask the people living near Efford crem - do they smell BBQ everyday?”

“The actual incinerator itself wouldn't be a problem, it's the large number of lorries going to and from it that are cause for concern”

“Once again, this is a typical short sighted scheme by PCC and the developers. Have we not, just built a power station on the outskirts to Plymouth? Surely it would have made sense to build this incinerator on the same site instead of blotting the landscape on what is supposed to be an area of outstanding natural beauty.”

“Ah, doesn't the incinerator looks beautiful against the green landscape of rolling hills.
Picturesque!. I'll bet it will even pumpt out fresher air than it takes in!.”
