Jail for 'cowardly' attack

A COWARDLY premeditated and deliberate punch from behind was designed to "knock out" a victim, a court heard yesterday.

Matthew Ward, 22, admitted to Plymouth Magistrates that he "knew exactly what he was doing and did not regret the consequences" of his actions when he punched his victim to the floor during a brutal two-man assault.

The defendant and another man accosted the victim, Benjamin Green, outside the Prince Albert pub in Stonehouse.

Ward ran up from behind and punched him in the back of his head causing him to fall to the ground.

The attack left Mr Green requiring eight staples in his head and complaining of sore ribs.

Ward pleaded guilty to assault.

Chairman of the bench Samia Sidhom said only a custodial sentence would be suitable for such a "premeditated and cowardly attack which knocked the victim to the ground and intended him harm."

Ward was given an eight-week prison sentence which he will serve in addition to his current custodial sentence. He is now expected to remain in prison until May of next year.
