FULL marks to Plymouth Pavilions for securing the UK's most exciting singer-songwriter of the moment, Jake Bugg, to play the venue on October 20.

Jake, 18, only signed a record deal a year ago but already he's won favour with the song-writing elite including Noel Gallagher, is the darling of BBC Radios 1, 2 and 6, and was nominated as Best Breakthrough Act at the Brits this week.

He has two more nominations at the NME Awards for Best Solo Act and Best Album.

His self-titled debut, which topped the charts on release last October, has been certified platinum, he's slated to appear at Reading/Leeds this summer and will be supporting The Stone Roses on tour.

High profile features have included the Guardian, NME front cover, Sunday Times Culture, Q, MOJO and more.

Young Jake seems to be taking it all in his stride, though.

"I don't pay too much attention to compliments," he says, "but the most common thing people are coming up to me and saying after the gigs is that it's refreshing.

"It seems like every time people say guitar music is dead, that's when it comes back. I think people are hungry for it."

He's been labelled the new Bob Dylan, for the lyrically honest observations and retro bluesy accompaniment, but actually it was Don McClean's Vincent that first grabbed his attention when he was 14.

"I was like, 'What's that song?'" says Jake. "And from there I just wanted to be able to play that song and write songs like it – that's where it started for me really."

Tickets went on sale yesterday.
