IT'S certainly the case that the way we work has changed considerably during the past 20 years – no longer does "a job for life" exist.

Most of us will need to be prepared to try different things in our working lives to try to find a role that is sustainable and satisfying.

City College Plymouth is working hard to equip its students with the skills they need to enter into ever changing workplaces, as being prepared for change is now a necessity.

The words "transferable skills" are used all the time by careers advisers, but what are they?

Transferable skills are the abilities, attitudes and competencies that we have gained from our lives and work that we can use in other areas.

An example of a transferable skill could be a parent who has been at home for four years raising a family; they will have developed budgeting skills, networking skills, time management, etc.

Other skills may be from work. Have you been trained on a specialist piece of equipment or on an IT system? If you have, it is likely other firms may use similar equipment and need someone with your abilities.

There are many skills which you will need to have or to develop to work in almost any organisation and there are others which are specific to the industrial sector.

Here are some transferable skills linked to the industrial/construction sector and you can get specific information on job types and the skills required from the National Careers Service website on the job profiles pages.

To work in construction you may need to be able to demonstrate your:

Communication skills.

Physical ability.

Trade skills.

Health and Safety awareness (CSCS – Construction Skills Certificate Scheme).

Prior knowledge or experience.

Driving skills/machine operation skills.
