Jury out in rape trial

THE JURY in the trial of a man accused of raping a drunken teenage girl in a city park have retired to consider their verdict.

Following closing statements by prosecutors, defence and Judge Graham Cottle, the jury of eight women and four men at Plymouth Crown Court retired yesterday at just before 11am to consider the case against Craig Goldstone.

The 28-year-old is accused of raping the teenager in Devonport Park on July 5 last year.

Goldstone, a father-of-four, denies the charge, claiming it was consensual sex.

The trial will not continue today and the jury have been told to return to court on Monday morning to continue their deliberations.

PLYMPTON residents can raise concerns about local issues at a special meeting tomorrow morning.

The Have Your Say event is aimed at people living in the Yealmpstone, St Maurice or Underwood areas.

PLYMOUTH hero Robert Falcon Scott would approve of moves to protect Antarctica, says city MP Oliver Colvile.

Mr Colvile, the MP for Sutton and Devonport, is speaking in today's third reading of the Antarctic Bill, which aims to extend environmental protection in the Antarctic.

He will say the continent was an early warning system for the global environment, and of increasing importance for tourism.

Captain Scott, who died on his way back from the South Pole in 1912, left "an amazing legacy" for the marine and Antarctic environments, Mr Colvile will tell MPs in the House of Commons.

BIRD watchers are in for a treat when an illustrated talk comes to Hartley next week.

Trinity United Reformed Church is to host the RSPB event on Wednesday, January 23.

The talk, entitled Birds of Spanish Steppes and Cota Donana, is to be given by George and Lesley Carr.

It will begin at the Tor Lane church at 7.30pm.

IN our report yesterday on a pedestrian being injured in a collision with a bus in Royal Parade, we stated that the incident had happened at the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Armada Way.
