The other, a Plymouth-registered red Vauxhall Zafira, was badly damaged and seen by witnesses parked at the side of the road.
Police were this morning piecing together what happened, and trying to ascertain whether the Zafira may have left the road and hit a tree.
The lane nearest the central reservation was closed and this was causing some traffic build up.
