'STUDENTS aiming to build a rapport' (The Herald, October 18). That sounds a really good and thoughtful strategy.

But I quote Oliver Colvile MP's closing statement. "They may be students on campus, but outside they are normal citizens like you and I."

I have to disagree. We pay the council to clear up behind them and often their 'for profit only' landlord, who has no conscience about dumping what the students leave behind in our back lanes, also by our mini recycling centre.

If they are just like us, then let them cover their part of the cost on our council, not us. Then I can agree with my MP. Oh, except like last night when our street was bedlam for over two hours with student partying. We wouldn't get away with it.

Nah, I can't agree with my MP, maybe some, but they are not all just like you and I and the (I don't care ones) are the ones that get remembered.

“Yawn. I wish the students would leave, watch how many shops and businesses close. Students are propping up the the city of Plymouth now it is no longer primarily driven by the dockyard.

Where do you think the landlords and bar owners spend their money? If shops go under because they're under used do you think the proprietors still pay rates to the council.

Everyone has a chance to become a student so why not try it sometime? Most go into better paid jobs and will pay council tax later on.

Disclosure, I'm not a student, but have been previously and now run a company and pay council tax....”
