Traffic on the major Devon road is using just one lane between the M5 and Deep Lane and is moving at between 20mph and 40mph.

Slip roads on and off the A38 are particularly hazardous where snow has piled and drifted.

Roads north of Crownhill are also covered in snow in places making driving difficult.

A police spokesman said at 7am: "There are difficult driving conditions across Devon this morning, allow extra time for journeys and check your local media for weather and travel updates."

At 3am police described the conditions as 'blizzard-like' in parts of Devon.

Plymouth is at the edge of the snow and is also being hit by heavy rain which is covering Cornwall.

Police are advising people to only make necessary journeys.

Up to 120mm of snow is forecast for Devon from with Dartmoor worst affected.

More than 30mm of rain is expected in Cornwall.

Gale-force winds of up to 45mph and freezing temperatures are forecast for the weekend.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning telling people to "be prepared" for snow. It also issued a yellow warning telling people to "be aware" of snow on Saturday.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell predicted many parts of Devon would wake-up to snow.

"There is something of a battleground in terms of the weather. Cold air is creating a barrier against the latest front coming off the Atlantic," he said.

"The blizzard conditions could cause disruption to commuters with the mix of rain, sleet and snow.

"Driving conditions could be difficult in Devon even on the main commuter routes such as the M5, A30, the A38 and A380 around Haldon Hill and Telegraph Hill.

"Although most of the snow will be gone by midday, some snow will lay on Dartmoor and Exmoor. Icy conditions will linger around on Saturday and Sunday."

Drivers were warned to stay off the roads unless their journey is absolutely necessary.

Steve Crosthwaite, head of the Highways Agency's National Traffic Operations Centre said: "We advise drivers to check road conditions and the Met Office weather forecast before they set off and during severe weather to consider whether their journey is essential.

"They may want to delay their travel until conditions improve and to allow our winter fleet the chance to treat the roads."

Drier conditions will remain in place over the weekend before a band of rain arrives overnight on Sunday,  bringing a spell of unsettled cold weather and the possibility of  hill snow next week.

Hundreds of motorists were trapped in snow on Haldon Hill for up to eight hours in 2009 and 2010.

"Potbelly 1 you clearly do not understand the word irony! I can understand the people who live out by the Moors complaining as they will get heavy snow fall and can be snowed in but not once in my life have I seen the snow in Plymouth to be so treacherous that it will endanger life. You're too close to the sea to start with which means that it won't last long!!"

    You are oh so young!”

What an utterly stupid comment to make. Who in all honesty goes out in poor conditions, only those of us who have to work~ the rest are just foolhardy.

However, if the schools shut then surely the schools should make the time up later in the year eg summer. The parents of the children have to stay at home in some cases to look after them and lose money, so that extra day will help them make it up.
Alternatively the teachers should lose a day's pay. I would lose a day's pay, if I said 'Sorry boss, can't get in, it's snowing'. His reply would be 'I'm here, so make an effort or I'll get someone who will!'”

“The weather isn't so much the problem. It is the staggering amount of mindless idiots (probably the same ones that can sit on this site all day posting the dumb comments).

I just came from Princetown. The road would be clean & gritted if it wasn't for the dozens of cars on "slick" tyres parked in the middle of the road. They simply don't care where they leave their vehicles, in some places you can barely drive around them now. The gritters can't grit, the snowplows can't clean. And tonight when the snowballers & sledgers have gone home the road is still a mess.”

“Oh for goodness sake WHY shouldn't the Herald, BBC or any other media report about the weather? I want to know about the situation and so do a lot of other people I expect, If you don't want to know about it then don't read about it, it's that simple!”

“Bloody hell Plymouth I hope you have all stocked up on necessities as it would seem that you may be marooned for a while if City Bus aren't running on time because of a sprinkling of snow which will be gone before they get to town from Milehouse! Up to 1.2 cm of snow I feel so sorry for you all as you have to put your lives on hold as it would be way too dangerous to go out in those treacherous conditions. E**ing pathetic. Have the people who used to sell the 'erald' been promoted to journalists?! 8 inches or 20cm of snow fall here at the moment and if I run out of bread or milk I'll just put my coat on and go to the shop. Simples”
