Dominic Harry and Hugh Borthwick have been training together for the Plymouth Half-Marathon all year, preferring to run together at 5.00am on a Saturday morning, as they watch Plymouth come to life.

Dominic ran his first half-marathon with a friend but at the 6 mile drink he lost him and ran the rest of the way on his own. Dominic is almost completely blind, with a rare eye condition called Achtromatopsia. His son also has the condition.

This will be Hugh's first Plymouth Half-Marathon and he has been training very hard on his own for the last two years every morning, and more recently with Dominic, who is now a seasoned half-marathon runner.

Because of Dominic's condition he did not fancy the idea of running at first, as he says he was afraid of bumping into other people and inanimate objects on the route! So Dominic started skipping to get fit until he was skipping 1 to 2 hours every day.

Eventually people at his office convinced him to give running a try. Dominic started running at night where his sight seems to work better and found he absolutely loved it.

Dominic and Hugh both agree there is a unified feeling during a half-marathon, from friends and family of the people running and everyone participating. Dominic is running for the Plymouth Actionnaires, an Action for the Blind Charity.

Hugh started running on his own to keep fit after he became a father. Hugh and Dominic have been training towards the 2012 Plymouth Half-Marathon. Hugh says that Dominic has been a great trainer and friend and is also a very inspirational person.

Hugh said: "I feel fantastic to have achieved the half-marathon distance for the first time this morning. I am really looking forward to the Plymouth Half-Marathon."

The Plymouth Half-Marathon will start at 9am on Sunday 3rd June. The run will start at Royal Parade and end in the Hoe. Check out the Plymouth Half-Marathon website for more information.
