This January Slimming World has trawled its research to

identify the recipe for successful – and sustainable – weight loss. The UK's

favourite slimming club surveyed the lifestyle habits of its most successful

slimmers, the target members who have lost weight and kept it off for at least

12 months. It found most people had seven habits in common and dubbed them 'the

seven secrets of successful slimmers'.

The Team who run Slimming World groups

in Central and West Plymouth say: "By learning from other slimmers' success,

and perhaps where they've gone wrong with past New Year's resolutions, people

in Plymouth who want to slim down this January can give themselves the best possible

chance of achieving their goal.

"Successful weight loss isn't just

about losing weight, it's about keeping it off too. Making temporary changes

and going on a 'diet' that's unsustainable in the long-term will only ever be a

quick fix, meaning you're bound to regain any weight you lose – and maybe more

– as soon as you go back to your normal eating habits. The key is to make

healthy, realistic changes to your lifestyle that you can keep up for the rest

of your life."

The seven secrets of successful

slimmers are:

  1. Eating a wide variety of filling foods.

Cutting

out food groups or banning foods completely will only make slimmers want them

more and likely to give into temptation. Slimming World's Food Optimising

eating plan allows members to satisfy their appetite on unlimited amounts of

every day foods that are filling but low in fat too like fruit and veg, pasta,

rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs and fat free dairy, so they can lose

weight without having to feel guilty, deprived or hungry.

  1. Be

    flexible.

It's

important not to become obsessive and get hung up on constantly weighing, counting

and measuring what you're eating. Sticking to a super-strict diet is near

impossible because no one wants to go without their favourite treats forever,

whether that be chocolate or a glass of wine or beer. Being flexible by

enjoying regular treats and special occasions means slimmers can lose weight or

maintain a healthy weight without missing out.

  1. Take

    up regular activity.

The most

successful slimmers are those who introduce some form of exercise into their

lives as well as adopting healthier eating habits. However, many people make

the mistake of aiming for too much too soon, instead start with small steps and

build up to a goal gradually. In the survey walking, one of the least strenuous

activities, ranked the most popular.

4. Plan and monitor

Planning

meals and shopping and focusing on their progress week-by-week means Slimming

World members are more in control of their weight loss and less likely to be

thrown off course by unexpected events. Recognising what might have sent

previous slimming campaigns off track can help.

5. Do it for yourself.

Being told

to lose weight scores very low as a motivator. Slimming World puts members in

the driving seat, choosing what they want to eat and what weight they want to

be.

6. Involve the whole family.

Eating

separate special 'diet' meals can make healthy eating seem like a chore,

enjoying the same healthy meals as the rest of the family was a predictor for

success in the research – and they'll be healthier too! In fact sharing your

goal with a family member or friend can add that little bit of extra commitment

to succeed too, and if they're happy to join in with you all the better.

7. Get support

Studies

have shown that slimmers who join a group benefit from sharing their experience

and being inspired and supported by fellow members with a common goal.

To get

support at any of the Slimming World groups in Plymouth, this New Year pop

along to any of the venues listed on this site or contact the Team Developer :

“Never mind Kizomba, I use my XBox Kinect!! I play Dance Central 2 three times a week for at least 30 minutes and it works wonders. All in the cosiness and solitude of my own front room. I attend Slimming World and have lost 5 Stone in the past. However, I got back into bad habits and am back again now. I've lost 1 Stone 2 Lb in 4 weeks since the beginning of January and you can eat loads, you just have to eat the right stuff. It helps so much if you have family support and my wife is doing it with me, she bakes some amazing low fat recipes from the various Slimming World books and I can't recommend it enough. Don't be afraid to walk through the door, we all did it once and you soon feel at home. You really need to stay to class though; if you're just going to weigh and go, what's the point? You can do that at home, but then you miss out on all the support of fellow members.

And, no, I'm not being paid for posting this. :-)”
