London rail fare for £13.50 needs new line of inquiry
NORMAN Baker MP, the Liberal Democrat rail minister, has written to me to say that quoting high rail fares between London and Plymouth in a House of Commons debate is "misleading" and he insists that tickets can be purchased from London to Plymouth for "less than £20, with the cheapest fare just £13.50".
I'm sure the Minister made good use of his civil servants' time in trawling the rail timetables in search of cheap tickets but I've certainly never found one that cheap – if any readers of the Herald have, then I'd be interested to know.

“Quoting bart123 "it may not be the must sociable or shortest journey but it can be done".Of course it can be done but for most people though to all intents and purposes as ALISON SEABECK says those totally inflexible cheap advance purpose single fares are only available if you can book well in advance and in very limited quantities at weird travel times when very few people want to travel anyway.Thats the marketing reason (yield management its called) why they are available in the first place because its hard to sell rip off rail tickets at those weird travel times when most people simply don't want to travel. Business wise you don't sell a train seat for £13.50 if you can sell it for £100 or more do you.Thats why walk on fare at peak travel times and dates are so expensive. Its simply a case of the marketing men matching the supply of train seats to demand as there are only so many seats available on a train.
NORMAN Bakers remarks remind me of those eye catching cheap budget air line fare adverts which are qualified by the small word FROM .Likewise with rail fares, bung in a few inflexible £13.50 fares at times very few people want to travel and the railways and NORMAN Baker can then say you can travel from Plymouth to London for as little as £13.50.”

“I would suggest before Alison Seabecks seeks to critise another MP's comments in the press that she should establish the correct facts. You can if you want, get a single return ticket from Plymouth to London for £13-50 and likewise from London to Plymouth. You don't need an army of civil servants to find this out.Five minutes on the First Great Western website (timetables/tickets) is all you need. The price is not hidden in any way.it may not be the must sociable or shortest journey but it can be done.
These comments rather reflect the standard of MP's representing Plymouth when they are unable to make the rudimentary checks to comment on a subject
