TWO lorry drivers had to be cut from their cabs when the two vehicles collided near a city shooting ground.

Paramedics treated both drivers for minor injuries after emergency services rushed to the scene outside Newnham Park House, in Plympton.

Fire crews from both Plympton and Crownhill were called to Newnham Road at 9.04am after reports of a smash involving two heavy goods vehicles.

A spokeswoman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said both drivers were trapped in their vehicles as a result of damage caused in the crash.

Firefighters, led by group commander Ken Anderson and aided by South Western Ambulance Service staff, used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the pair.

A police spokeswoman said a red Volvo truck had been in collision with a white DAF lorry.

It is understood one belonged to a Totnes-based haulage firm and the other to builders' merchant Travis Perkins.

Neither man suffered any injuries in the accident, the spokeswoman added, but traffic officers were forced to close a section of Newnham Road while the two companies arranged recovery of the vehicles.

The road was finally cleared at 11.15am.

    “@Darren, R and Ginjafro:

Maybe, just maybe, the shooting ground has mentioned as a point of geographical reference...”

“What were these HGVs doing on the Newnham Road - most HGVs cut through the hamlet of Hemerdon - ignoring blue 'No HGV' signs, damaging property and endangering residents. Not that Devon County Council care.”

“Was, by any chance, this article (or maybe even the accident itself) sponsored by The Newnham Park Shooting Graounds (¿The finest shooting venue in the South West¿). Otherwise I fail to see why this detail is included.

Will future incidents on Royal Parade be reported as "close to Dingles"? And accidents on Tavistock Road identified by being "just a short walk from B&Q"?”

“Wow, all that information and it happened near a shooting gound! I would also like to point out it happened near Chaplins but not quite so near to Sparkwell. Oh, I forgot to mention it was also fine and sunny.....”

“The lorry drivers are always uninjured in road accidents. Maybe we should all be driving around in HGVs to reduce the carnage on the roads.”
