THREE outstanding students from Marine Academy Plymouth are set for an exciting summer – two in the USA and one at Oxford University.

Head girl Amy Weaver, aged 17 and from King's Tamerton, beat the competition to land a summer school place at America's famous Yale University.

It aims to introduce some of the UK's most academic young people to the benefits of study in the USA, and Amy required 8A/A* grades at GCSE to be eligible to apply.

Amy, who has never travelled further than Newquay before, said: "This is an amazing opportunity to experience American culture and spend time at Yale University."

Amy is studying for A Levels in Performing Arts, Mathematics and Biology.

Deputy Head Girl Caitlin Butchart, 17 and from Camel's Head, has been selected to attend a summer school at Oxford University.

She achieved the highest GCSE grades at the Marine Academy last year and wants to pursue a degree in English at university. She is currently studying Performing Arts, English and History.

Caitlin said: "I'm looking forward to experiencing life at one of the most renowned universities in the world."

Year 13 student Stephanie Wearne, aged 18 and from West Park, has just completed her A Levels in Sociology, English and History and has gained a place at Plymouth University to study History.

In 2011 she earned the title of 'Most Employable 17 year old in Plymouth' and has now been nominated to attend a Global Leaders conference in Washington DC and New York.

Stephanie said: "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"I'm really grateful to everyone who has helped me raise the funds needed to attend the conference, particularly Barry Rodgers at the Marine Academy, and my mum!"

Academy principal Helen Mathieson, said: "Amy, Stephanie and Caitlin contribute so much across the whole range of activities at MAP; they are superb role models and each of them demonstrates for their younger peers all that is possible if the right opportunities are put within grasp."

“"Thanks for that correction Pete! Seems that If the foreign family then pays up front a preferred place is then forthcoming? Now if we take that one step further and the move to the front of the queue of students of british families pay up front. The net result clearly seen by the Plymouth University directorate as being couched with the belief 'a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' with all such fees being immediately available. Who can blame them for the thrust to promote the 'upfront' fee payers? eventually the result will soon be in place for o Univerities to be being completely taken over by upfront fee payers. The advantages are enormous! Its an education system designed for the rich to inherit the seat of learning Universities and well off foreign students stealing a march for their own countries being promoted for placements first and last over the whole of our less well off student population."”

“A nice Story? Now in todays BBC news The reason University's provide favoured placements to foreign students is because they pay up to fifty percent more in tuition fees. Ask the question of the Plymouth University director If this is why she was so adamentof pursuing this prefererance?
So this I take it meets Camerons criteria of wanting more from our schools to finish up at University Whilst on the subject- How does the govement retrieve the grants from those foreign students returning to their own country and earning salaries over the prescibed amount?. Do they keep track of such students or are they informed by the country of origin when retrieval of the grant is due.Is it any wonder we are being left behind the rest of the world. When our own kids go to the back of the queue.”
