MARINER IN LINE TO BE NEW NUMBER TWO
PLYMOUTH Argyle are tracking former Pilgrims legend Paul Mariner in an attempt to lure him to Home Park as assistant manager.
It is believed Mariner, 56, has not yet committed himself one way or the other to the role, which could see the ex-international striker run the Championship team with current boss Paul Sturrock.

But The Herald understands Argyle are very interested in hooking Mariner
(pictured right)
, who has just left Plymouth after promoting the city's World Cup bid.
National newspapers claimed yesterday Mariner's arrival as assistant manager was virtually a done deal.
However, Herald Sport believes one or two issues between the two parties need to be resolved before an agreement can be finalised.
Whether those issues involve Mariner's contract with the club remains to be seen.
Mariner himself, who jetted over to Plymouth from the United States to promote the city's World Cup bid, said he would not rule out returning to England to manage.
He added, when asked about returning to England during a press conference, he had never been given a chance to pursue a managerial career in England.
Speculation that Mariner was on his way to Argyle as Sturrock's assistant was heightened when he spent eight hours at the Pilgrims boss' house after flying in from the United States.
While the conversation between the two former internationals could have been purely about their careers, it is not impossible Mariner was being briefed about Argyle as a club and the sort of players he would have at his disposal.
Mariner is currently assistant coach to former Liverpool and Scotland star Steve Nicol at American Major League Soccer side New England Revolution.
He is thought to have returned to America, but admitted this week he would consider any coaching offers in the future.
"I have been asked many times whether I would like to work in England but I have never had the opportunity," said Mariner, who scored the goal against Hungary which qualified England for the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
"When the opportunity comes along, I will make that decision.
"At the present moment, I have got a couple of things in the States that are different to the MLS and they are on the table."
Nobody was available at Argyle for comment.
Argyle's current assistant manager is Kevin Summerfield.

“This whole thing stinks. The Board are pushing the World Cup bid and need a big name to go with the club. Mariner might be their only possibility, having an affinity for the club and the city, and being an ex-England international. It has nothing to do with the ability to guide PAFC to the Promised Land (previous comments here echo my own opinion that Mariner has no experience, is too old etc). Come on Board - let's concentrate on getting Plymouth up the league and forget this ridiculous World Cup thing. There are dozens of grounds around the country with facilities and transport far superior to our own. I don't want us to be small-minded, but what happens on the pitch has to take priority over some hyped-up World Cup bid.

“Arranged marriages do not always work. Paul Mariner and Sturrock have known each other for mater of hours. Given his recent track record of falling out with players and staff I don¿t give this marriage much chance. One other point is despite Paul Sturrock poor management record over the past years he does have a wealth of knowledge of the English game in comparison to Paul Mariner. Paul Mariner is far too old and lacks the real ambition to succeed at this level.”

“Im not happy with Paul Mariner being lined up to coach the greens ,he has never coached in the championship and its just not what we has a club need, yes we need to sack Sturrock along with the current coaching staff but to bring in a man with no experience to work with Sturrock would border on the stupid to say the least. The new board have some very strange ideas, iv been following Argyle now for well over 40yrs and im very worried by whats going on at Home park. How they cant see that Sturrock isnt a championship manager i dont know. Why cant the just sack him and move on this world cup nonsense is all they care about why !!,we as a country may not even get the competition. Lets get a bit more positive news on the problem of being in the religation zone in the championship please......”

“If it was spring I'd put this down and an April Fool. Mariner is a total legend for us - but management credentials - where are they ?
As an ambassador - I can see it - but not as a manager.
We are already burdened with Sturrock who hasn't got the tactical skills to plan his way out of a paper bag - now we are bringing in someone with even less experience.
If it was 10 years ago it would have been different. Trevor Francis would be a better option than Mariner - at least he has a track record (all be it not very good) in managing at this level and he's got roots in this area as well -with probably a more distinguished career than Mariner - though they were in the same England team together (I was lucky enough to see them in action in that 1982 epic against France in Bilbao).
There are lots of hearts ruling heads in this thread I think - but please just get rid of Sturrock - two wins against two teams who are likely ot accompany us through the trap door is no reason not to sack him.
Begone Sturrock begone from our lives.”

“i think getting mariner would be a good option. i mean start him off as assistant so he learns his trade. i dont think he'd fob us off if a half decent offer came along like pulis and holloway did. i mean he's been at his team since 2003.”

“There`s only one ex player with true Green Blood, with badges, and that`s Paul Wotton. The sooner he returns as manager for Argyle the better.”

“Agree totally Plymtel - Mariner was a terrific player but how many times do terrific players fail as managers? Barnes & McAteer seemed the dream ticket for Tranmere and look where they are now. Even World Cup winners like Hurst, Moore, Stiles and Bobby Charlton failed at managerial level. And the US is not the same as the Championship by a long chalk. It would be great if it worked out but we are in danger of entering fantasy land if Mariner is appointed at the helm. Someone with experience in the English league is required - where is Steve Cotterill now?”

“Paul Mariner was an excellent player for Argyle and is still revered as such, it would be a pity if he came back as assistant manager/ manager and flopped his credence would be smudged, think hard Agyle, think even harder Paul.”
