MADNESS fans were not disappointed when the nutty boys took to the Plymouth Pavilions stage on Friday night for a long-awaited packed concert.

The band from North London performed a storming gig, two years after their last sell-out date at the venue, and were on fine form for their fans.

It's been a brilliant year for Suggs, Chas Smash, Chrissy Boy, El Thommo, Woody, Baso and Bedders with the release of their critically acclaimed new studio album The Liberty of Norton Folgate.

This 15-track tribute to their home city is rich in storytelling tradition with a strong nod to the band members' maturity, but still stuffed with the catchy hooks, ska rhythms and bold brass that made people fall in love with them 30 years ago with the release of One Step Beyond.

Those who had possession of a gold-dust ticket to the Pavilions show were given a good helping of Norton Folgate songs, as well as old favourites like House of Fun, Our House, Lovestruck and It Must Be Love.

“My partner and I went to see Madness on Friday, and they were ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! - totally exceeded any expectations we may of had. We also felt that the venue was very nice, having never been there before we didn't know what to expect and were not at all disappointed..We found it to be well organised, and we parked in the NCP above Toys'r'US very cheaply; and used the covered walkway straight in to the venue.. Ok, so once inside, the beer wasn't cheap but you kind of expect that so no great surprises there.. The main point I want to make is that we got there very early as I am only 4ft 5" tall, and knew that if we didn't get 'upfront' then I wouldn't see a thing, so we made a special point of getting there before 5pm. We were one of the first in, and straight up to the barrier when the doors opened.. ok, so it meant a bit of waiting around, but well worth it.. Within a matter of 20mins (before the concert had even started) a bouncer approached us and said to me that if at any time I felt crushed, claustrophobic, or had any other problems whatsoever, then to stick my hand up and they would get me over the barriers immediately and said I could stand with them in the walkway between the barrier and the Stage.. The same bouncer never took his eyes off me the whole time; making sure I wasn't in danger of being crushed, etc.. He kept putting his thumb up to me to signal if I was ok, and was handing water out to me and the rest of the crowd on a pretty constant basis. I honestly could not have been looked after better, and would not hesitate to go to to another gig at the Pavillions in the future.”

“MAtt, what I'm trying to get at is the Pavilions is not a "Premier Music Venue".

Not many MASSIVE bands come here. Them Crooked Vultures and The Prodigy are massive though, and I'm going to see them both, minus the missus, where I can jump around like man possessed.

What I'm trying to get at is The Pavilions is not up to scratch. We need a decent 10-15,000 multi purpose arena, not a poxy shed.

Would have loved to get seated tickets but I left it a little too late.

I'm happy standing, my missus doesn't normally do concerts loves Madness, but hates standing. I don't deny the atmosphere was great, but, dear God, the venue is not refelctive on the city.

    Demolish it and start again.”

“Tony, I come from Surrey originally (lived in Plymouth for seven now) so have had the fortune of Wembley, Brixton, Hammersmith etc on my doorstep, and have seen some top concerts.

I may have been spoilt by thesse decent venues, but the Pavilions really is an armpit.

It was more disappointing for the wife who at 5 foot, couldn't see a thing. I was alright.

It isn't a slight on Madness, they were great, just the venue was a big let down.”

“I was down for the weekend, delivering Christmas presents to my family and had a great time. Can only agree with Tony that the venue is a good one, we were half way back and there was plenty of room. Not sure that all of the band will even fit on the stage when they play Leeds tomorrow night!
Just one gripe though, over £5 pounds for a pint was a pretty unpleasant surprise! Glad that bands are coming to the city, it certainly beats the trek that we used to have to make to Saint Austell to see anyone decent.”

“PACKED!! Left after 45 minutes as I have never been so squashed in my life (and I was at the back!). I think the amount of beer bellies on show took up more room than the average concert, and may have accounted for this.

The band were great, the venue however is a shed, and an embarressment to the city. The quicker the venue is levelled and a decent replacement built the better!!”
