Mail's Redshaw completes St Budeaux treble
ST BUDEAUX TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
ROYAL Mail's Matt Redshaw delivered a first class service by not only retaining his men's singles title but adding the men's and mixed doubles titles as well.
In the men's singles final it was a repeat of the 2010 showpiece against Paul Wardle with Redshaw again winning two sets to one.
Throughout the match service was never a deciding feature as both players returned consistently well.
Wardle looked the more composed at the start of the final set and led 3-2 before Redshaw conceded only a further seven points for the set and championship 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Redshaw teamed up with Matt Lloyd against the 2010 men's doubles winners Simon Yeo and Ashley Scoble.
Yeo and Scoble started in a confident and attacking manner before, in a game of six deuces, Scoble lost his serve and the first set 7-5. Lloyd served out the second set 6-3 and the match.
Toni Aitken, 16, is the ladies' singles champion after beating elder sister Nicola in the final.
Toni has shown great improvment this season and from 4-3 down in the first set, Toni lost only one more point to prevail 6-4.
Nicola again led 4-2 in the second as Toni lost her length before winning the next four games and the set 6-4.
The Aitken sisters teamed up in the ladies' doubles final against Viv Sargeant and Nancy O'Connor in what turned out to be the closest of the five finals.
In windy conditions Sargeant and O'Connor made fewer mistakes, winning the first set 6-3.
The final set went to a tie-break and Toni and Nicola saved a match point before winning it 8-6 for the title 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
In the mixed doubles Sargeant and Redshaw defeated Lloyd and Toni Aitken, who held her serve to take the first set to a tie-break which they won 7-5.
Torrential rain then caused play to be abandoned for the day.
Resuming 24 hours later, Lloyd and Aitken led 1-0 in the second set before the match swung the way of Redshaw and Sargeant, who won nine of the next 10 games for the second set and a 3-0 third set lead.
Lloyd and Aitken pulled back to 3-2 before Redshaw and Sargeant won the match 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2.
