Makeover for iconic Plymouth pub
BESIDE the cobbles of the historic Barbican stands one of the city's most iconic landmarks, famous for its 'rough and ready' interior.
But whisper it quietly; the pub made famous by artist Beryl Cook is set to undergo a spruce-up.
The Dolphin Hotel has a special place in many Plymothians' hearts, thanks to its no-nonsense decor and friendly bar staff.
It even inspired painter Beryl, who loved to sit quietly observing locals and visitors before immortalising them in her distinctive works of art.
Now the lived-in interior loved by so many locals and visitors is being given a facelift.
Landlord Billy Holmes said: "It isn't going to be spoilt, just tidied up a bit."
And despite the introduction of 'poseur' high tables and high bar stools, alongside new slate flooring and brighter paintwork, Billy doesn't think The Dolphin's famous atmosphere will be lost.
"We'll keep the locals and hopefully bring new people in too," he said.
Billy, who has been behind the bar for more than a quarter of a century, can't remember the last time the pub was given a makeover, although the toilets were refurbished around six years ago.
The spring-clean will see the walls, ceiling and woodwork painted and new lighting installed along with a wood-burner to add to the friendly, local feel of the place.
The toilets will be given a new look with red and black checkered flooring and a new sign will also hang from the outside wall of the pub, welcoming old and new customers to the bar.
"It'll certainly brighten the place up," said Billy.
But one thing that isn't going to change is the pub's lasting link with the late Beryl Cook.
The famous Plymouth artist was a regular, and The Dolphin is still decorated with prints of the paintings she set in the pub.
"I think most people will accept it all," said Billy. "I've spoken to John (Beryl's husband) and he said it was all right."
The refurbishment is being paid for by Punch Taverns, the business which owns the freehold on the property.
A spokesman for the company said: "We're delighted to support our licensee, Billy Holmes, at the Dolphin with an investment.
"He has consistently done a fantastic job and built a pub that is a credit to the local community. We wish Billy continued success and are delighted to be working with such a great partner."
The redecorating will begin on March 18 and should be complete by April 1.
The Dolphin will be closed for three days, between March 22 and 24, while the floor is laid.

“It was said in the pub last night that Billy has had no input in the changes and is under orders from the owners.”

“Has anyone thought of staging a sit-in (drink-in) protest. It's time for some grass roots action to save Bet's pub!”

“This was mine and also close friends local pub crawl few years ago and I still have a place for this pub, even if I occasionally visit now with my husband when we are in town. Don't knock it till you've tried it! There were and still are some great characters in that pub, unlike the "plastic pubs" as people have commented on in the area with no "real life or gusto". Try to keep the Dolphin as it is, not too many changes please!”

Given that Billy cant even remember last weekend and tis about time the tiolets were cleaned after 6 years - its no wonder the place needs the " how clean is your house" girls have a go .”

“Typical! Where's Mick, Barbican when you need something pointlessly pontificated? Roy Twing, Whitehaven. - unquote
He is struggling big time to figure how he can bring the BNP into the conversation.”

“What I find astounding is that despite all the local issues facing your city, one hundred and thirty of you are driven out of the woodwork and on to the internet to comment on the proposed changes in a local boozer. Absolutely amazing. If you could channel your interest in boozers in to something a little more productive............”
