BEACHES at Jennycliffe and Batten Bay, Mountbatten are sparkling after 40 volunteers spent two hours cleaning them.

Members of the Marine Conservation Society teamed up with British Trust for Conservation Volunteers to spend an hour on each beach, followed by a barbecue at Jennycliffe.

Coordinator Amy Bugg said: "We found small pieces of plastic and polystyrene on both beaches, an enormous rope at Batten and a large piece of metal at Jennycliffe.

"We filled 14 bags at Batten and 17 at Jennycliffe."

All the litter picked up was recorded on a data sheet for the MCS to strengthen its campaign against dumping at sea.

Amy added: "Some of the stuff was from far away, including a full bag of saline solution printed in Spanish."

The MCS Plymouth local group aims to do four beach clean surveys a year, but the date for the next has not yet been set.
