Former Argyle striker Sam Malsom given chance to make mark at Bulls
HEREFORD United will include former Argyle striker Sam Malsom in their squad to take on the Pilgrims at Edgar Street tonight (7.45pm).
The 22-year-old signed for the League Two club last week, after impressing manager Simon Davey during a pre-season trial.
Malsom was released by Argyle in 2007, despite his good goalscoring record in youth and reserve team football.
The Teignmouth-born striker has subsequently played for B36 Torshavn in the Faroe Islands and FC Throttur Reykjavik in Iceland.
Malsom was Argyle's top scorer when the under-18s competed for one season in the South West Premier League in 2006/07.
He netted 21 goals in 17 starts and nine substitute appearances for the Pilgrims, but that was not enough to persuade then manager Ian Holloway to keep him on.
Hereford have played five pre-season friendlies going into their game against Argyle, including a 2-0 home defeat of Swansea City.
The Bulls have won four times and lost once — 4-1 to Swindon Town at Edgar Street.
Malsom scored one of the goals in Hereford's 7-0 rout of Lydbrook Athletic, a Gloucestershire Northern Senior League side, last Thursday.
Hereford, who finished 16th in League Two last season, appointed Davey as their manager in June.
John Trewick had been replaced as boss by chairman and director of football Graham Turner in March.
But Turner sold up his shares in the club earlier this summer and has taken over as manager of League Two rivals Shrewsbury Town.
Turner had previously had a successful stint as boss of Shrewsbury, as well as Aston Villa and Wolves.
Davey was appointed as his successor at Hereford in June, after only two months as manager of Darlington. The 39-year-old had previously been the Barnsley boss from November 2006 to August 2009.
Former Hereford striker Stuart Fleetwood has returned to the club this summer, after he was signed from Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed transfer fee on a two-year contract.
The 24-year-old spent much of last season on loan to Exeter City. He scored four goals in 16 starts and 11 substitute appearances for the Grecians in League One.
Admission to the game at Edgar Street tonight costs £8 for adults, £4 for senior citizens and £1 for under-16s.
