Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed of his death.
Officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit have begun an investigation into the circumstances of this incident.
They said it was believed six vehicles were involved in the crash.
The A38 was closed in both directions between Dobwalls and Carminow Cross most of Thursday afternoon and evening.
Traffic officers were clearing the scene until midnight and the road was reopened around 6am yesterday morning.
Police said the arrested man was not the driver of the lorry, but was the driver of a third vehicle.
He has been released on bail with no charges brought against him until January 9 while officers continued their investigation.
Police would like to appeal for witnesses to this incident – either the incident itself or to any details immediately before the incident took place – to contact them on 101 and quote log 396 of 6 September 2012.
