Man arrested after biker dies in six-vehicle crash on A38

A BIKER died in a crash with a lorry in South East Cornwall yesterday.

Traffic along one of the Westcountry's busiest roads faced severe delays after the accident.

The biker, a man in his 70s from Liskeard, was airlifted from the scene after his vehicle was involved in a collision with a lorry on the A38 at Two Waters Foot near Liskeard, shortly after 2pm.

Last night the driver of a car, said to be from East Cornwall, was arrested and was being interviewed.

Sarah Pearce, of the Halfway House Inn, said staff were left shaken after the accident happened nearby.

She said: "Somebody came in after we heard a big bang. The chef went up the road, but he didn't want to get too close. It was a motorbike, and we have been told the rider died. They're closing the road and the air ambulance has just taken off. It's very sad."

A fire crew attended to clear up spilled paint thinner from the lorry. The road was closed in both directions to allow specialist police officers to carry out an investigation into the circumstances.

A police spokesperson said: "A man, who is believed to be local to East Cornwall, was arrested in Bodmin on Thursday afternoon in connection with the investigation into the collision. He is currently in police custody and helping police with their enquiries."

Officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit have begun an investigation into the circumstances of this incident.

It is thought that there were six vehicles involved, including the motorcyclist who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The scene was clear by around midnight and the road was reopened around 6am this morning.

The motorcyclist was a local man from the Liskeard area in his early seventies who had been travelling eastbound towards Liskeard when he collided with a car and a HGV which was travelling in the opposite direction.

His next of kin have been informed.

The driver of a BMW, a 37 year old from St Austell, was arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on police bail until 9 January 2013 while officers continue with their investigation.
